Urban BioChar uses

residential uses of Biocahr

Besides providing an enjoyable smokeless and sustainable firepit we facilitate making and using biochar simple, practical, economically and environmentally sustainable with our Trailblazing process. Please reach out if you can’t find the information that you are looking for.

garden mulch

Biochar as decorative mulch is unique and looks great, the contrasting dark colour makes plant colours pop. Wood mulch fades and decomposes, mostly as carbon dioxide to the atmosphere (every 2-5yrs) and then must be re-purchased, re-delivered and re-installed. Wood mulches return the carbon stored in wood back into atmosphere than would naturally occur. Given our current atmospheric cirumstances, this is not very wise. On the other hand biochar mulch permanently stores carbon, lasts a lifetime, it’s fade, termite and flame resistant and can be made at home at less cost than wood mulches. It is also the only carbon negative mulch and the only mulch that uses no fossil fuels, moving parts or electricty to produce.

Compost enhancer

Adding biochar to your compost improves the composting process by keeping the compost both moist and aerated. The liming effect of biochar helps to neutralise acids naturally formed by the composting process and biochar helps to prevent nitrogen and nutrient loss. Add 10% to your home garden compost system as a minimum. We also recommend using biochar to soak in liquids from your compost and worm farm where possible. The compost nutrients stored in biochar last years longer than compost without biochar.

fertilizer extender

A unique feature of the Trailblazer process is the ability to add soluble fertilisers to the water in the biochar collection vessel before and during firing. This way your are garanteed that the fertiliser reaches the core of the biochar and utlises all the of the high internal surface area of the biochar. Our biochar will turn any fertiliser into a long life slow release fertiliser. Synthetic fertilisers can be used, but we recommend using Seasol or fish emulsion as these will be of greater benefit to your soil biology.
